As part of the Canadian government’s efforts to address the affordable housing crisis Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a $600-million package of loans and funding to build cheaper homes and leverage modern construction technologies. 

As Tradeau pointed out, the housing crisis is dramatically affecting younger generations and their ability to become homeowners.“Younger generations, like millennials and gen-Z, feel like they’re falling behind because housing costs are just too high,” said Trudeau.

As part of the package $50-million will go through regional development agencies to modernize homebuilding by directly financing projects involving modular construction, mass timber and 3D printing amongst other processes. A further $500-million in low cost loans will also be applied to projects that leverage innovative techniques including prefabrication and modular construction.
